Intelligent Transportation systems

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

“Intelligent Transportation Systems” (ITS) include the application of advanced information and communication technology to improve safety and overall mobility, especially during peak travel periods. Many transportation and emergency management agencies use these technologies to monitor, coordinate and respond to transportation-related incidents and congestion.

Examples of ITS applications include:

​

  • Communication services and facilities that transmit information;

  • Traffic control center that serve as central location for traffic management;

  • Video surveillance equipment that monitors roadways for congestion and incidents;

  • Variable message signs that display traffic information to motorists;

  • Vehicle detection devices that report traffic counts, speed and travel time;

  • Roadway sensors that monitor weather and road conditions;

  • Roadway service patrols that respond to incidents in a timely manner; and

  • Real-time transit information to provide accurate locations of buses and distance to stops.

 

 

Why ITS?

​

A regional ITS Architecture was developed for the Flint Hills MPO to provide a roadmap for ITS integration over the next ten years. It was developed cooperatively by the region’s transportation agencies, covering all modes in the region. It represents a shared vision of how each agency’s systems will work together in the future, sharing information and resources to provide a safer, more efficient, and more effective transportation system for travelers in the region.
